About Kenya

Planning to volunteer with CIVS Kenya? Here is what to know before you arrive.

Before you arrive

Karibu Kenya — Welcome

Kenya is a warm, vibrant country in East Africa, renowned for its hospitality, stunning landscapes and rich cultural diversity. Volunteering here is an unforgettable experience — here is a quick guide to help you prepare.

Culture

Kenya is home to over 40 ethnic communities, each with its own traditions. Expect warmth, community spirit and a deep respect for guests. Greetings matter — take time to say hello.

Climate

The climate is mild and pleasant year-round in the highlands. Long rains fall March–May and short rains October–December. Western Kenya is warm and green; bring light clothing and a rain layer.

Language

Kiswahili and English are the official languages, and English is widely spoken. Learning a few Kiswahili phrases — "Jambo" (hello), "Asante" (thank you) — goes a long way.

Safety

CIVS hosts volunteers in welcoming rural communities. Follow your coordinator's guidance, keep valuables secure and stay aware of your surroundings, just as you would anywhere. We provide a full orientation on arrival.

Getting here

Most volunteers fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. CIVS arranges your onward transport to our resource centers in western Kenya and meets you on arrival.

What to expect

Simple, comfortable accommodation, home-cooked Kenyan food, and meaningful work alongside the community. Come with an open mind, flexibility and a willingness to learn — you will gain far more than you give.
